Press Release: Meyers Brothers Kalicka Promotes Three Professional Staff Members

Holyoke, MA,  Nov. 4, 2010– Holyoke-based accounting firm, Meyers Brothers Kalicka, announces the following staff promotions:

Kelly Dawson, CPA/MBA has been promoted to Manager in MBK’s Audit and Accounting Division.  As an auditor, Kelly works primarily with not-for-profit organizations as well as with rental real estate entities.  Kelly has been with Meyers Brothers Kalicka and in public accounting since 2003.  Prior to that, Kelly earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Masters of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  In 2003 Kelly earned her Masters of Business Administration (MBA), with a concentration in accounting, from the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management.  Licensed as a certified public accountant in Massachusetts, Kelly is a member of the American Institutes of CPAs (AICPA) and the Massachusetts Society of CPAs (MSCPA).  She also serves as the treasurer of the Berkshire chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club and has volunteered as a Big Sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County program.

Bryan Fortier has been promoted to Senior Associate.  Bryan works as an auditor in the firm’s Audit and Accounting Division.  He has worked in public accounting since 2004 and joined Meyers Brothers Kalicka as an Associate in 2006.  Bryan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Champlain College and is currently pursuing his certified public accountant license.  Bryan is a perennial volunteer of The Upward Bound Program, a federally funded academic program whose mission is to assist students in grades 9 thru 12 in the successful completion of high school and to prepare them for post-secondary education.   As a past benefactor of this program, Bryan created his own Upward Bound scholarship and over the past several years, has provided over $5,000 in scholarships to qualified low-income high school students who seek to be part of the Upward Bound Program.  Bryan serves as a mentor for accounting students as part of the mentor program at Westfield State College, and currently volunteers as a Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County program.  He also serves on the Advisory Board of YMCA of Greater Springfield.

Timothy Garstka  has been promoted to Senior Associate.  Tim also works as an auditor in the firm’s Audit and Accounting Division.  Tim began his career in public accounting when he joined the firm as an accounting student intern from the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management.  He was later hired as an Associate Accountant.  Tim is currently pursuing his Masters of Business Administration from Western New England College.  He is also a member of the Young Professional Society of Greater Springfield.

The tax code allows an individual to claim a deduction for business debts that have become worthless. But qualifying for the deduction may be more complicated than one would think. In a recent case, the IRS denied more than $17 million in bad debt deductions on the grounds that the advances in question represented equity rather than debt, hitting the taxpayer with millions of dollars in taxes and penalties.
